I like to think of myself as an open-minded person, and I really do like to think that trickles into my design practices, even sometimes without me noticing. And today, as I’m being self-reflective, I stand by this sentiment and I think that it (hopefully) bodes well for my client projects and for my own home. I tend to eschew the rigid rules and design "tips" for the most part, and encourage clients and anyone who will listen really to fill their homes only with things that they love. And I truly mean that! So as a preface to this letter, if there are things on this list that you truly and absolutely love, then by all means, please use them in your home. But I’m also here to push back on the notion that you actually do love these things- rather, I think you’ve been told that you need to love these things by the simple sake of them being pervasive in every furniture shop/ HGTV show/ viral image on Pinterest or Instagram/ so on and so forth. It’s a real ‘which came first’ situation with some of these pieces, and I’m here to tell you that I believe that the manufacturers are the ones who came first here to set these trends, or make these things popular, or to dominate any Wayfair search for these items, specifically.
