Hello! We’re talking lighting today. I get a lot of requests to do my favorite round ups, and lighting is among the most popular of requests that I get. And for good reason- lighting can be a toughie. I was recently lamenting the lack of pretty and affordable table lamp options with some friends of mine, and they wholeheartedly agreed, so I know this is a common problem for you interior lovers out there. While I’m always on the hunt for new and unique options, there are several tried and true vendors that I constantly return to when sourcing for client projects and for my own home.
First, there are a few things that I look for in lighting pieces. These requirements can vary depending on the type of lighting that I’m looking for (chandelier, table lamp, etc.), but there are some non-negotiables when sourcing:
proper scale- whether that be for a ceiling light, a pendant light, or table lamp. I find that people often go too small with their lighting (and yes, this can be done well if it’s done intentionally), but you often need a bigger fixture than you think you need! At the very least, a larger scale piece can often change the vibe of a room.
“bad brass”- I talked about this a bit on furniture pieces in this post, and it’s the same with lighting: I avoid painted or plastic-looking gold accents on lighting. This especially plagues table lamps, which can often have a fake brass base or giant gold finial that’s just nor necessary. I tend to like ceramic lamps that have no base, brass or otherwise, if I can’t find the perfect piece or am on a tight budget.
non-LED- this is self-explanatory. If they’re going to take away our beloved warm filament bulbs, the very least that we can do is not purchase any built-in cool-toned LED lighting (a quick caveat: small cordless rechargeable lamps *can* be an exception to this rule).
Psst- If you’re in the market for a rug, I wrote a post on my 10 Favorite Rug Vendors here!
